Hi Diana. I've tried Yelp's check in. It's nothing more then just that. No bells or whistles, and from what I can tell, no real incentive to do so. That's the trick with check in apps, incentives for people to stick with it and that's where I believe Whrrl exceeds.

Interesting. Whats your thoughts about Yelp's Check In by the way? I'm Yelper, so it just became natural to be hooked on that since my community is with Yelp.

Thanks Veronica. Yea, I'm definitely a fan. I really think if they can get some more deals lined up for users, they have a chance. The only way they'll reach critical mass is if they give real incentives for the everyday user and not just the social media nuts like us.

Hi Jason,

I've been aware of Whrrl and its fantastic team for a long while now, but didn't really start using it and loving it until I switched from Blackberry to iPhone. It's getting better with every new feature. I especially agree with your 3rd point. It's so important to take it beyond just checking in, and rewarding frequent visits doesn't make sense for many industries.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

Veronica

I like Google Buzz, mostly due to its convenience of access, notifications and reach. Liking Google's products in general also plays a factor. Glad I found your blog.

Jason, really really interesting, thanks for sharing. I've been planning to do a "what I've learned about blogging" post as well, but haven't gotten around to it; in part because I have only recently become more consistent in terms of publishing daily.

The content issue is, of course, always relevant. I think for a lot of us, the tough question becomes, do we write what WE want to write about, or do we write about what will drive traffic? Of course it makes sense to focus on a topic or theme, and invariably the data will show that's what people are interested in (and Stuart has great tips below as well). On the other hand, we have so many facets to our personalities and if a personal blog is not for sharing all those facets, then what is it for?

(That's a rhetorical question, by the way. :))

I'm curious as to your opinion of the bounce rate. Yes, I've read Google's documentation, etc. But for a blog that is not ostensibly selling anything, what parameters should one put in place? Any thoughts/tips much appreciated.
