80’s Movie Goodness: How I Got Into College
I guess depending on the era we grow up, we’re always children of our time and typically are fond of what comes out of those decades. For me, I’m definitely a child of the
80s and love just about everything that came out of it. None more then some of the classic films such as this little gem from director Savage Steve Holland. Holland also directed the classics Better Off Dead and One Crazy Summer
that you might remember a bit better then this hidden gem. This was Steve’s 3rd and actually final major film in the director’s chair which is too bad in my book. I only wish they would make more classics like this these days.
So why do I include this film on my short list of classics? Well let’s be honest, this one never had much a chance with the critics or the viewing public, but for me it was all about timing I guess. This film dropped in ‘89, and by the time I caught it, it was right around when I was starting to think about college. It’s one of those classic 80s feel movies with a great soundtrack, chock full of montages, 80s high school schtick, and a Curtis Armstrong scene. It’s basically the story of an average high school senior who decides to base his collegiate plans on that of the girl he’s desired all throughout college. Oh, and did I mention that Phil Hartman is in it? He was great in just about everything he was in.
The movie never had a soundtrack, but that didn’t stop me from digging up some of the songs from the movie. The title track “Young” was performed by Jason Scheff who is actually the lead singer of Chicago. Love that song. You can actually download it here as I did the serious digging for any of you that are interested. It was never released commercially, and this isn’t the greatest quality, but it’s the best available.
If you haven’t done so already, be sure to add How I Got Into College to your list of rentals. Especially if you’re a fan of classic 80s fare.
